iPhone 13 Pro Rear Camera OIS Failure: Symptoms, Diagnosis, Repair

OIS (optical image stabilisation) failures on the iPhone 13 Pro are the single most expensive camera mistake to misdiagnose. The symptoms sound like three different faults but almost always point to one module — and a wrong part order means a $20-$80 refund or worse, a write-off.

What OIS failure looks like in real tickets

  • Shaking or jitter in photos taken in good light
  • A faint rattle when the phone is gently rotated
  • The 3x telephoto lens shows a black image or refuses to switch
  • Camera app crashes when zooming past 1x

Sound familiar? They all live on the same rear module. Order one rear camera assembly and you fix them all.

The diagnosis matrix

Symptom Real fault Order
Shake in normal photos OIS magnet assembly loose Full rear camera module
3x telephoto black Telephoto module dead Full rear camera module
Both wide and ultra-wide blurry Optical bench shifted Full rear camera module + bench check
Rear shakes but front is fine Front camera (separate flex) Front flex

The wide and telephoto modules on the 13 Pro are paired on a single flex and a shared OIS magnet. Splitting them is not field-repairable at shop level — order the whole module from our iPhone 13 Pro stock.

Why Pro models cost more than the base 13

The Pro adds a third telephoto module and a larger OIS magnet assembly. Generic "13 cameras" do not fit — the Pro module uses a different connector layout and a longer flex. Verify the model on Settings > General > About before ordering: A2638, A2639, A2640 and A2641 are the four regional SKUs but the camera is the same across all Pro units.

Post-swap checklist

  1. Open Camera, test 0.5x / 1x / 3x switching
  2. Record 4K 60fps for 30 seconds — heat tells you if the magnet is calibrated
  3. Run a third-party OIS test app if available
  4. Check telephoto focus: aim at text 2 m away, ensure sharp

FAQ

Is Pro OIS compatible with the regular 13? No. Different magnet size, different flex, different connector. Order from Pro-specific stock.

After the swap, photos still shaky. Most often the calibration data did not transfer or a counterfeit module was used. Genuine-spec modules pass all tests on the first attempt.
