iPhone 8 Power Button Stuck or Not Clicking: Diagnose the Flex Before You Quote the Board

An iPhone 8 that takes multiple presses to wake, that feels spongy, or that does not register at all almost always traces to the side-button flex. This is one of those repairs that pays for itself to keep in stock — small parts investment, same-day saleable, and recurring ticket volume.

What "stuck" actually means

Three complaints walk in with the same vocabulary. It helps to nail down which one you have:

  • Spongy / soft: the rubber dome on the flex has compressed and is no longer snapping the click.
  • Stiff / stuck pressed: the side button has snapped into the frame (rare, but it does happen on drops).
  • Dead: no registration at all, even with multiple presses — flex is torn or the connector has come loose.

Confirming it is the flex and not the board

Check Settings > General > Accessibility > Side Button. If double-click and slow-charge settings both work, the logic board path is alive — meaning the flex is the part to replace, not a board component. If even the slow-charge setting does nothing, the fault could be board-level; quote carefully before quoting low.

Replacement procedure

  1. Open the phone (pentalobe, suction, tri-point).
  2. Disconnect battery first.
  3. The side-button flex attaches under the logic board bracket on the 8 — three screws and a single ZIF connector. Note the orientation, the flex folds back under the SIM tray.
  4. Pull the old flex, transfer the side button itself to the new flex if you are reusing the existing button, or fit a new assembly.
  5. Re-seat the ZIF connector until it clicks, refit the bracket, refit the battery.
  6. Test single-click wake, double-click Apple Pay, and SOS via side-button press.

Cross-fit note

The iPhone 8 side button flex fits iPhone 8 Plus as well, but is not compatible with iPhone 7 — the 7 uses a different geometry because of the mechanical home button. Stock matching parts in our iPhone 8 collection and our flex cable collection.

FAQ

What about iPhone 8 Plus? Identical procedure, slightly longer flex. Same connector geometry.

Does the new flex ship with adhesive? Quality aftermarket flexes include pre-cut adhesive for the bracket; lower-cost ones do not.
