iPhone X Front Glass vs Full Assembly: Which Repair Should Your Shop Quote?

Independent shops that service the iPhone X often default to a full-assembly replacement on every screen ticket. That is sometimes the right call but not always — when the OLED is intact and only the front glass is cracked, a glass-only repair is half the part cost with similar customer-facing quality. Here is how to choose.

The two repair paths

Path When it applies Part cost Repair time Customer-facing quality
Front glass only Glass cracked, OLED image perfect, no dead pixels ~$15–25 60–90 min Excellent (if separator set up correctly)
Full assembly Glass cracked plus image issues, dead pixels, lines, color drift ~$50–90 30–45 min Excellent (out of the box)

How to test the OLED before quoting

Power the phone on with the cracked glass in place. Set it on a clean white background and inspect — look for black splotches, vertical lines, or color shifts at the edges. Any of those means the OLED itself is damaged and a glass-only repair would be wasted; quote the full assembly. If the image is uniform white and the touch response is normal everywhere, the OLED is sound and the glass-only path is open.

When glass-only is the wrong call

  • The OLED has visible burn-in or uneven brightness.
  • True Tone is missing before the repair — True Tone survives glass-only but the customer's expectations have to be reset.
  • Touch latency was already sluggish. The new digitizer + new glass combine oddly with aged OLED.
  • Shop is not equipped with a separator and laminating mold. Glass-only without the right tools is a high-rework repair.

The economics

For a shop with the right equipment, glass-only iPhone X repairs are one of the most profitable single repairs you can offer. For a shop without the equipment, full-assembly swaps are safer and faster. Be honest with your customers about which model your shop runs — most customers will accept the higher-margin full-assembly on the first ticket and migrate to glass-only once they trust the result.

Stock and cross-sell

Stock iPhone X screens, glass laminates, and batteries together so the upsell conversation is part of the same ticket. Bundling the screen + battery turns a $90 ticket into a $150 ticket and the customer walks out with a like-new phone.

FAQ

Does Face ID survive glass-only repair? Yes — Face ID hardware is on a separate bracket. Glass-only repairs never affect Face ID.

What is the right separator / laminator for glass-only? A heated platen separator + vacuum laminator is the current standard for shops running volume. Entry-level hot plates introduce yield loss.
