Liquid in a charging port is not always a charging port replacement. On the iPhone XS, most liquid-exposed ports are recoverable with the right cleaning sequence — and the right sequence is shorter, safer, and cheaper than a flex swap your customer doesn't need.
Step 0 — Read the liquid indicator
Open the SIM tray and look at the indicator inside. White or pink means no liquid contact. Red or amber means liquid has entered. Note the colour in your repair ticket before continuing — this is your evidence trail if the customer disputes the cause later.
Step 1 — External inspection
Use 10x magnification or a USB microscope to inspect the connector pins. Look for:
- Green / white corrosion on any pin: requires cleaning, possibly port replacement.
- Black residue on the housing: usually moisture + lint.
- Bent pins: port replacement required.
- Pins at uneven heights: port has been physically damaged, replacement required.
Step 2 — Power off
If the phone is currently on and plugged in, unplug it first, then power it off. Liquid + powered circuit is the cause of every "phone died during a swim" story; cleaning a powered circuit is the cause of every "technician got shocked" story.
Step 3 — Disassembly
- Open the phone per the standard pentalobe + tri-point procedure. Disconnect the battery first.
- Disconnect the display connector next.
- Inspect the charging port flex from the inside. Use 10x magnification again — corrosion visible internally is the deciding factor between cleaning and replacement.
Step 4 — Cleaning solution
- Apply 99% isopropyl alcohol to a soft-bristle toothbrush.
- Brush the connector pins gently for 30 seconds. Do not flood the area with alcohol — the flex is moisture-sensitive and flooding can wick into the logic board.
- Wipe dry with lint-free cloth. Repeat once.
- For green corrosion, leave the alcohol in contact for 2 minutes before brushing.
Step 5 — Drying
Place the phone on a 40°C pre-heated mat for 20 minutes. Do not use a hair dryer — the heat is uncontrolled and the airflow can push moisture deeper. A 40°C mat is enough to drive off isopropyl and trace moisture without damaging the display.
Step 6 — Re-test
- Reconnect the battery.
- Plug in a known-good charger. Confirm charging icon appears within 5 seconds.
- Plug into a computer and confirm iTunes / Finder recognises the device.
- Make a voice memo and confirm the bottom microphone records audio.
- Run a test call to confirm the charging port microphone path.
When to replace instead of clean
- Visible green corrosion on more than 30% of the pins.
- Plugged-in charger is not recognised at all.
- Continuity test fails on more than one pin between the connector and the logic board — meaning the trace is damaged.
Stocking for shops
Keep isopropyl alcohol, anti-static brushes, microfiber cloths, and low-wattage pre-heating mats as core consumables. Order replacement XS charging port flex assemblies as a fallback for tickets where cleaning is not sufficient; many of these are sold in the same bundle as battery tickets because customers with liquid damage often have a degraded battery too.
FAQ
Can rice substitute for the drying mat? No. Rice is slow, uneven, and the starch contaminates the logic board.
What if the phone was salt water? Salt accelerates corrosion. Disassemble before any drying attempt, and clean the connector with isopropyl within 24 hours.
